Is your baby having colic?

If your baby is having colic, then you are not alone. Tons of babies out there are suffering from it and nobody knows what causes it. Today, there are also tons of theories that try to explain it and even then, nobody has actually confirms which theory works and which doesn't.

The only thing I can say is this. It is all about trial and error. It is all about what work for you and keep on doing it.

So, what I'm going to share with you right now is what I had done to prevent my baby having it. Although he did experience a period of colic symptom, I insist that it is not colic.

Whenever a baby cries non-stop, many parents associate it with colic, or sometimes, they call it the baby is having wind in his/her stomach. This is true and not true. Baby can cry for any reason that you can imagine under the sun. Basically, when they feel uncomfortable, they will show it through their only way of emotional out burst, and that is crying. And because of that, we parents must take a step back and observe the symptoms why the baby is crying. I will recommend that you actually get hold of the Dunstan Baby language. My wife and I had watched it and I must say, it had helped us a lot. Once we know what's our baby trying to tell us, we were able to respond more accurately to his need.

In my personal opinion, if you think your baby is having colic, it is a display of stomach discomfort. I would like you to imagine. If you are having stomach discomfort, what kind of physical symptoms will you experience? If you see that in your baby, most likely, they are having stomach discomfort.

There are many reasons why baby is having stomach discomfort. Let's go through it point by point.

  • If your baby is a fully breast feed baby, or your baby is drinking expressed-milk, then the mother needs to check what food is she taking. This is because whatever goes into her diet, will affect the breast milk nutrients. Food that has cooling effect should not be taken. Vegetables that contains flowers should not be taken. Only pure green leaf vegetables are allowed for breast feeding mother.
  • If your baby is drinking formula milk, check the brand. Is your baby not comfortable with that particular brand? Do you want to switch to another brand? I will recommend organic infant formula milk, rather than those standard commercial formula milk. The organic formula milk is more gentle to the baby digestive tract.
  • Is your baby in a too warm or too cold environment? Both environment will cause stomach discomfort. Just imagine, try eating a meal under the hot sun. How would you feel? Or try drinking something cold in a cold environment? Remember, the baby system is still developing.
Besides these pointers, there is another point that I will like to highlight. It is important for both father and mother to stay calm and positive. Why is that so? This is because baby has a strong sense of emotional attachment. Any tension between parent will affect his/her mood. No matter what happen to the baby, no matter how stress you have become because of the baby, stay positive and calm. Once we are positive and calm, we will be able to understand the baby better. After all, they are just like a piece of white paper. Simply waiting for us to put nice colour on them.

So, this is what I had done to assist my baby to go through this uncomfortable period:
  • I started feeding my baby with pro-biotics at a very early stage. So how early? I think when he was about 2 weeks old. Pro-biotics help to ensure a healthy digestive tract. You will discover that the baby poo is not so smelly if it has abundant of pro-biotics in their disgestive tract.
  • I always massage his stomach during and after bath. During bathing time, I will massage his stomach in a circular motion gently. After bathing, I will dry him and apply Chinese medicine oil for baby on his stomach. This is to keep his stomach warm. A warm stomach is a happy baby.
  • Help the baby to do stomach exercise. Interesting huh? Well, this is what I did. I actually taught my baby to do stomach crunches. Haha... this is to help him build up his stomach muscles. This exercise is very straight forward. Just bring up his 2 legs but not too high, bend his knees and push it gently towards his face. This exercise will press his stomach.
  • Feed him with colic water. It must be those non-syrup type, or not sweet type. Feed them regularly in every feed.
  • If your baby is sleeping in a air-con environment, keep him warm. The father have to check on him regularly to ensure the baby is covered blanket. My wife is usually very tired after breast feed him the whole day. So, I will wake up in the middle of the night to check both of them. Baby will kick away the blanket and thus, we must cover it back.
  • Send your baby for swimming. I started my baby swimming at 6th week and never look back. My wife and I felt that swimming had helped a lot in terms of his physical development.
  • Always have positive bonding with the baby. Remember this point. Parents must have as much physical contact as possible with the baby. If you have a maid at home. let the maid focus on doing the household chores and etc... You should focus on the baby. Slowly, you will see that the baby may improve in one way or another. If you ask me why? Well, I don't really have an answer for that. It is the way the baby communicate with us.
Lastly, there are a lot of materials out there for us to read. Check on them as well. There is nothing much you can do if you bring your baby to see a PD. Everything will depend on us.
